Fun summer projects!

Using scraps to their potential!

Hi all, it's Wednesday and we've got guest designer Ally Cope joining us again to share some fun things to do with your scraps! 

"We all create scraps when we craft and there’s nothing better than using your scraps up on one of your projects to make your crafting dollar go farther.  Today I’m going to share a few tips on your using your scraps to their best potential.

Cards are one of the best ways to use up your scraps.  Fold a piece of left over cardstock and you’ve already got a great way to use up strips of cardstock.  After all, a card doesn’t have to be a standard size!

 
 “Hello, My Friend” – cardstock, Bazzill;  patterned papers, My Mind’s Eye, Bo Bunny;  embossing powder, Hero Arts;  ink, Versamark;  tools, Klic N’Kut machine.

For my “Hello, My Friend” card I used up some scrap pieces of patterned paper.  All the patterns coordinate so they make great card elements.  Try using a simple punch and back it with a fun colour to make the negative space POP!

 

 
 “Joyeux Noel” – cardstock, Bazzill, Gina K. Designs;  embossing folder, Sizzix;  stamps, myStamp BOX;  glitter, Martha Stewart;  ink, Ranger, Stampin’ Up!; ribbon, American Crafts.

For my “Noel” card, I stamped a sentiment all over a scrap piece of green cardstock and then stamped my Christmas ornament on a bright pink cardstock scrap and added some fun glitter.  Use your scraps and emboss them with a corresponding image to add interest to your cards too. So simple and so fast to create!

 

 
 “Celebrate” – cardstock, Bazzill, Gina K. Designs;  stamps, Flourishes;  ink, Ranger, Stampin’ Up!;  die cut shapes, Spellbinders.  

For my “Celebrate” card, I stamped a simple background and then matted a very simple image as my focal point.  I then used some foam tape to bump up my sentiment cut and embossed out of a scrap of cardstock to add dimension to this simple masculine card.

So then next time you go to toss out your scraps of cardstock or patterned paper, take a second look at them.  Maybe you can create a fast, fun card to match our last project!

A tip, a trick and a technique with Sarah!

Good morning!  Welcome to 3T's Tuesday here on the SCT blog.  Today I challenged myself to come up with a good old Canadian hat trick, or trio– a tip, trick and technique. Also, in light of the fact that this is Scrapbook AND Cards Today, I am bringing you both a layout and a card to get your creative juices flowing. Oh, yes. This blog posting has got it all, baby!

Tip: Core’dinations ColorCore Cardstock has just come out with some amazing new products. Two of these include Tim Holtz’s Kraft-Core Cardstock and a new Core Impressions Collection featuring Pink Paislee’s designs and colour palette from their new Nantucket Collection. The Kraft-Core collection consists of 24 different coloured cardstocks with a kraft paper core. This allows you to sand, tear, emboss and distress to reveal the kraft paper goodness hidden inside. The Pink Paislee Core Impressions Collection comes in 4 pre-embossed designs and 5 colours for a total of 20 beautiful sheets. The patterns and colours match ever so nicely with their Nantucket Collection which just came out at Summer CHA in Chicago.

 
Supplies: Core’dinations Cardstock (Pink Paislee Core Impressions) and Sand-It Gadget tool, Pink Paislee patterned paper, Imaginisce i-Top, Paper Punches and Brad Daddies, Quickutz letter dies and photo corner die, Sizzix Cherry Blossom Branch (coral) die, American Crafts layering tape, Xyron Creatopia (to adhere thin letters), Font: Mason, other: sewing machine and thread.

Trick: I don’t know about you but I own a lot of diecuts and punches. I have recently started to look at them through different eyes to see what I can create from what I already own. For example, here is my Sizzix Cherry Blossom Branch Decorative Strip Die:

 

When you trim off the leaves from the branches you are left with some beautiful coral which can be added to your summery and beachy layouts.

 

Technique: You can add a lot of dimension to your diecut and punched projects when you use Core’dinations ColorCore Cardstock. It allows you to sand the edges to reveal a different coloured core.

 
Supplies: Core’dinations cardstock (Tim Holtz Kraft-Core Collection) and Sand-It Gadget tool, Jillibean Soup patterned paper, diecut and kraft paper, Fiskars grass border punch, Funky Heart Squeeze Punch, paper crimper and oval punch, Creative Memories circle cutter (for semi-circle cut), American Crafts layering tape and Imaginisce i-Top, Paper Punch and Brad Daddies.

For the flower I used my Fiskar’s oval Squeeze Punch to create the petals from Kraft-Core Core’dinations Cardstock. I then sanded the edges to reveal the kraft core, which coordinates nicely with the kraft paper base of the card. Also, notice how I used my Fiskar’s Funky Heart Squeeze Punch to create the leaves for the flowers.

 

I encourage you to start looking at your dies and punches through different eyes. If you turn them, fold them, layer them, and only punch part of them, what else can they become? Happy craftin’!

"Joy Fold" cards with Ally Cope!

Good Monday morning!  We are back from Chicago full of brand new ideas, some great techniques and we are working with some fabulous new products in our office.  It was a very exciting show and our fall issue will be full of all that we gathered there!  We were also thrilled to come back and discover that we had reached 6,000 friends on our facebook fan page!  SO EXCITING!  If you have not joined us yet, you can do that by clicking here.  It is the best way to get up-to-the minute information about all that goes on here at SCT!

This week we have Ally Cope joining us as our guest designer.  We always love Ally's great ideas and this week is no exception. 

"This week it’s all about cards!  I am an avid card maker and always love sharing cool card techniques with my fellow crafters.  Today I am going to create a “Joy Fold” card with you.  It’s super easy and so I challenge you to share your “Joy Fold” cards with us!

I started off with two pieces of cardstock:  5” x 7” and a 3.5” x 7”.  I folded the 5” x 7” at the 2 inch mark and then folded the other piece in half.

 

Then I created a few decorative panels for all the front surfaces of my card.

I created a large square panel to cover the whole 5x5 background of the card.  Another to cover the 3.5 square front panel.  And a final panel to span across the 2”x5” flap.  I designed a fun scalloped star strip using my Klic N’Kut die machine to be attached to the back of the 2”x5” flap.

 
Supplies: stamps, myStamp BOX;  cardstock, Bazzill, Gina K. Designs;  patterned papers, October Afternoon;  die cutting machine, Klic N’Kut;  sewing machine, Pfaff;  ink, Stampin’ Up!, Ranger;  other, thread.

I assembled the panels and adhered them down.  I adhered the folded square to the center of the back panel.  To keep the central flap closed, I adhered a little star to hold the flap down with some foam adhesive.

CHA sneak peek - Day 3...and a fab giveaway!

There is no doubt being away at CHA is one of the highlights of our year.  Many people stopped to ask us what we had seen and beyond all the incredible and fun new products, we always said "friends".  We spent a great deal of time collaborating, discussing upcoming articles and also making new friends.  At the show yesterday I made a new friend...

 

We saw many beautiful fall, halloween and Christmas lines but one of the gems of the show was the line produced by Amy Tan for American Crafts.  This fun, trendy line was all that we knew it would be.  Full of whimsy, fun patters and colour combinations that make it a line you WANT to scrap with!  We fell in love not only with the line but the wonderful person behind it too.  Amy is the sweetest girl who is full of life...the good life as she would tell you.

While I would have loved to share even more pictures from the AC booth, they had 700 new amazing products.  New cutters, new punches, pens, glitter cardstock and SO MUCH MORE!  All the new products can be seen right here and be prepared to fall in love.

CHA sneak peeks - Day 2

Good morning!  Day 2 at CHA was another amazing day.  Just imagine walking through a candy store with beautiful candies lining every wall.  Yes, that is what CHA is like.  From beautiful papers, to fabulous projects to amazing artwork.  It was a great day!  We are thrilled to share some more photos with you and can tell you we have been picking up some yummy goodies along the way to share with YOU (pssst...be here tomorrow!)
