Confetti, NSD and Let's Make a Deal!

Happy Monday morning SCT friends!  We have a lot to chat about so grab a cup of something wonderful and join Davinie as she shares a great new trend, learn more about what we have planned for National Scrapbook Day this Saturday AND find out about how we plan to celebrate our 11,000 wonderful facebook fans!   So let's get started with Davinie's great discovery...

"Hello friends!  Davinie here with some projects featuring some fun trends in the industry right now.  Today I wanted to talk a little about confetti.  Confetti is hot right now.  There are a lot of ways to make confetti for your layouts, but the best way I’ve found is simply two different sized hole punches.  There are fun border punches that do the trick, but with a hole punch, I can make use of little bits of scraps by punching exactly where I want to go.  I also use ½ inch circle punches, and there are also small shaped punches you can pick up at big box stores that make for fun confetti fodder.

At our elementary school they do a big celebration when they reach the 100th day of school.  This year Payton’s class made hats, had a 100 day snack where each kid brought 100 of something (we brought chocolate chips.  Last year when Morgan was in first grade we brought fish crackers), and they mix it together for a fun treat. 

Because it was a celebratory day I wanted to make a fun layout, and that means adding a little confetti.  I also utilized another fun product making a resurgence; vellum.

 

To start this layout, I trimmed some vellum, added some confetti, and stitched the whole thing down in the middle of my background paper.  I stitched a grid to add some texture and also keep the pieces spread out a bit as I planned to add layers.

 

Then it was a matter of adding tags, journaling spots, banners, and a title.  The “100” was trimmed with my Silhouette Cameo (but you could easily print something on the computer and cut it out to use as a template.

 

I topped off the layout with some fun new veneer cameras from Studio Calico.

Jillibean Soup Giveaway!

Want to see all the fun we have?

We are back from Crop & Create Moncton and, like Crop & Create Winnipeg, Markham and Saskatoon, we had an incredible time and met some pretty amazing women!  From the moment we arrived in Moncton until the moment we got back on the plane, it was a fabulous experience for the Crop & Create team.  The ladies and onsite stores that attended, and those that just came to shop, were thrilled to be there and are a pretty excitable bunch  :)   To say we will head back there in a heartbeat is an understatment! Thank you Moncton for 2 beautiful days!!!

Of course we are showing you this and telling you about it because in 5 weeks we are in Vancouver, BC for Crop & Create Burnaby!  Would you like to join us?  We have some space and it looks like we have attendees from Washington, Saskatchewan, Alberta and of course BC!  Won't you come?  It is a weekend of inspiration, education and more fun than you can imagine!  Just check out our Crop & Create facebook page for even more about it!  But just to give you a window inside Crop & Create...

A dimensional banner with Lisa Dickinson!

Here's a super quick way to make your next card extra special.  Punch several small shapes from various patterened papers. (I used about 40 butterflies, punched with the Jenni Bowlin Fiskars punch) Then, using a needle and thread, string up the shapes! Secure the string around the backside of your card, letting it drape slightly to form a dimensional banner.

This technique is a fabulous way to spice up any project (and it would be ideal for Mother's Day cards!) Try it out on your next card!  ~ Lisa Dickinson

Sharing a little Creativ Festival fun!

Morning! This week will just fly by and then it will be time for the CreativFestival in Mississauga, Ontario this Friday and Saturday!   As part of the festivities I will be offering two free make and takes on the Saturday at 10:30am and 1:30pm but for those that can't join us, I thought I would share them with you!

The first make and take is a card which is perfect for Mother’s Day or as a thank you card for someone special in your life. I used Core’dinations’ Kraft Core cardstock which comes in many colours and has a kraft paper core. To make the cute little clouds I used just the top of my Stampin’ Up! cupcake punch. To create the “grass” section of the card, I used my Fiskars’ Grass Border Punch and then embossed the cardstock with the bottom portion of my “Bird Call” folder (Cuttlebug). Delicious!

Supplies: Core’dinations cardstock and Sand-It Gadget tool, Jillibean Soup kraft paper, My Mind’s Eye patterned paper, Stampin’ Up! cupcake punch (cloud), flower punch and “Sweet Button” embosslit, Fiskars’ border punch and circle punch, Cuttlebug embossing folder, We R’ Memory Keeper’s Corner Chomper,Technique Tuesday stamp, Tsukineko ink, other: layering tape.

The second make and take is a two-fer! We will be making a gift tag (“Happy Mother’s Day” option shown) and a bookmark. For this project I used my new Stampin’ Up! die, “Two Tags”.

It’s a great little die as it adds the score line/fold line onto the tag for you. I always like to add a topper to my bookmarks as it helps to prevent them from falling down into your book.

Supplies: Core’dinations cardstock, My Mind’s Eye patterned paper, Jillibean Soup twine and kraft paper, Kaiser paper flowers and bling, Stampin’ Up! die, heart punch, button embosslit, and sentiment stamp (Happy Mother’s Day), Fiskars’ heart punch, Technique Tuesday stamp, Tsukineko ink and We R’ Memory Keeper’s Corner Chomper.

Finally, at CreativFestival this weekend, I am teaching my Patchwork Quilt Album class at 3:30pm (2 hr. class). You must pre-register for this class and information can be found right here for that.  We will be working hard to complete a 12-page album in two hours.  This album would make a fantastic Mother’s Day present as well!

I hope to see you this weekend at the CreativFestival. Vicki Boutin and Virginia Nebel will also be there on Friday! Vicki will have copies of her brand new book Creative Foundations on hand and Virginia will be showcasing a brand new die she just discovered!  We will have some great fun in the SCT booth!

A "punch" challenge with Lisa Dickinson!

A designer that is always a favourite around SCT and here with us this week is Lisa Dickinson.  With a great eye for design, a witty sense of humour (a great blog to start the day with!) and a girl who works kraft paper like no one's business, we are thrilled to have her! 

"One of my favorite tools in my scrapbook arsenal is the paper punch. They are quick and easy to use and offer endless options for scrapbook pages.  And with all the newest releases of this versatile tool, I find my collection is ever-expanding!  So recently, I challenged myself to use as many different punches as I could on a single page. 

The result was this layout, which features a grid design that creates small "galleries" for all my punched artwork. I love that the layers of punched shapes add dimension without being too bulky. And they are easy to layer with other embellishments like flowers, stickers, and buttons.  I ended up using seven different punches to create an assortment of paper embellishments that help reflect the theme of my page.

So today I'm challenging you to pull out your punches and see how many you can incorporate on a page. Shapes, borders, letters, words, tags....all your punches are fair game!  Can you use more than seven?!  I think you'll be surprised how easy it is to work punches into your design.  Can't wait to see what you create!
