Before we start with today’s challenge I wanted to give a great big shout out to all the fans of Scrapbook & Cards Today who dropped by our booth at the CreativFestival in Toronto this weekend. It was wonderful to meet everyone and hear your thoughts on our magazine. Here is Scrapbook & Cards Today new Creative Editor, Crystal Jeffrey Rieger, with some photos and details from the event and a challenge:
It was a busy weekend for us at SCT but I managed to snap a few photos for those of you who couldn’t make it to the show. Here is what our booth looked like.
It was full of the latest and greatest product samples for everyone to check out as well as some amazing drawings for some prizes.
Everyone got to take a trip down memory lane as we had all our past issues available to look at and you could purchase back issues if your collection of magazines wasn’t complete.
We also had lots of Make ‘n’ Takes at different times throughout the show. See the woman in pink? That is Catherine, the founder and publisher of SCT, showing everyone how to make the gorgeous treat boxes you see on page 11 of the current issue.
Thank you to all the wonderful sponsors who generously donated product and prizes for the show – Core’dinations, Daisy Bucket, Doodlebug Designs, Fiskars, Jillibean Soup, Janome, Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L, Sizzix, We R Memory Keepers & Xyron.
Now on to today’s challenge. Handwriting. That’s right. I challenge you to use some handwriting on your next scrapbook page or card. It doesn’t have to be big. It doesn’t have to be a lot. It just has to be somewhere on your page!
supplies: patterned paper, Cosmo Cricket, Heidi Swapp; punch, Fiskars; adhesives, Glue Dots, SCRAPBOOK ADHESIVES by 3L; ribbon & tags, Cosmo Cricket; pen, American Crafts.
If you are nervous of ruining your page, try handwriting on a removable surface such as a tag or label. If you mess-up, you can toss the tag and start over.
Before you hand write anything in pen, always make sure to write it out in pencil first. This way you can concentrate on forming your letters instead of your spelling or sentence structure.
supplies: patterned paper, Martha Stewart; cardstock, Worldwin; pen, EK Success, Sakura; rub-ons, Fancy Pants; adhesive, SCRAPBOOK ADHESIVES by 3L; other, embroidery floss.
If you are up for a greater challenge try writing your journaling on a shaped line. Let the shapes on your page help dictate the line you are going to follow.
Don’t forget that handwriting can also be used for titles as well has journaling. Imagine never running out of the letter “e” again!
supplies: pattern paper, BasicGrey; cardstock, Bazzill, The Paper Company; chipboard shape, Scenic Route; ribbon, Fancy Pants; tag, Making Memories; pens, EK Success; adhesives, SCRAPBOOK ADHESIVES by 3L.
Trying varying the pen colours used to create emphasis or interest within your title.
Looking for more ways to add handwriting to your pages or cards? Check out my book, The Scrapbooker’s Handwriting Workshop (Memory Makers, 2009) for more ideas. Happy handwriting everyone!

Oh my goodness, how is it that I haven't heard of, or seen this magazine? If the blog is anything to go by, the magazine must be wonderful!

I'm trying to embrace but really my writing is BAD! I did post some recent ones though. I always feel like I have wrecked them once I wrote on them. Thanks for inspiring!

I enjoy journaling in my own handwriting sometimes. When I get rushed my handwriting gets real bad. Enjoy your articles.
