Designer Challenge: Crochet a 5-Petal Flower!

 
Happy Monday everyone! Since the summer issue of Scrapbook & Cards Today came out on June 25th, I've received a bunch of emails asking me for the pattern to the crocheted flowers I made on my "Pink Posies" layout on page 45 (see below). Even if you've never crocheted a day in your life, this is a super easy, little flower to make and you only need to learn four basic stitches to make one yourself!

The following links will guide you through the basic stitches that you will need to learn in order to crochet this flower. A video tutorial is also available with each stitch!  Super easy!

Here are abbreviations and links you will see throughout this post:

ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
st = stitch (sometimes called a loop)
slip knot (to begin the flower)
fasten off

Here is the flower you will be learning how to make:

For this sample, I used a 2.5mm crochet hook and #5 cotton perle yarn. However, if you are just learning to crochet, start with a larger hook and a heavier yarn.

To start, create a slip knot, ch 4, and sl st into first ch to form a ring (I know it doesn't look like much of a "ring," but I assure you it is there!)

ch 3 (this will count as your first dc), then 15 dc into the ring; join with sl st in top of ch 3

ch 1, sc in first st, 6 dc in next st (this will complete petal  1)

*skip next st, sc in next st, 6 dc in next st  (petal 2)

repeat * three more times for five petals total; join with a sl st in first sc and fasten off. Run the yarn tail through a few stitches on the backside of the flower with your crochet hook and trim off.

Your flower is complete!

For this card, I crocheted three white flowers and lightly sprayed them with Cherub Pink Glimmer Mist. Once dried, I popped a Dear Lizzy fabric-covered brad into the center of each flower. Two torn pieces of  Dear Lizzy fabric paper gave my card the perfect touch of homespun charm.  Join me again Wednesday and see a unique spin on my favorite summer fruit!

I have tried to crochet flowers but my hands no longer can crochet. Bad hands, bad hands!

I used the yellow five petal flower for a headband and it looked beautiful. I went one step further and sewed a pearl button on the head band and created several five petal flowers in different colors. The head band was white. Voila, when the baby wears different colors, just switch out the flowers. The circle in the middle provided an excellent way to "button" the flowers on. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful flowers.
