I’m excited to be back today to share some more tips, tricks and techniques. Last Thursday I posted a layout on my blog which featured a God’s eye and a pleated kraft paper border. Here’s a little sneak peek:
Supplies: Core'dinations cardstock (Core Impressions - Jillibean Soup Collection) and Sand It Gadget, Bazzill cardstock (white), Jillibean Soup patterned paper, kraft paper, cardstock stickers, Sugar Picks pins, corrugated alphas, Fiskars heart punch and layering tape, Quickutz letter dies (DAY), Stampin' Up! binder punch, DMC embroidery thread, Glue Dots, Font: Mason, other: sewing machine and thread.
God’s eyes, traditionally made with yarn and sticks, are thought to have originated in Mexico with the Huichol Indians. The Huichol call their God's eyes, Sikuli, which means "the power to see and understand things unknown." At the birth of a child, the central eye is woven by the father, then one different or alternating coloured eye is added for every year of the child's life until the child reaches the age of five (Wikipedia).
For this God’s eye you will need:
- 6 Sugar Picks (Jillibean Soup) or long trinket pins
- Glue Dots
- embroidery thread or twine
Step One: Take two pins and join them to each other in the middle with a mini-Glue Dot.
Step Two: Add the additional 4 pins, using the Glue Dot as a tethering point
Step Three: Tie one end of the embroidery thread (at least 1 meter/3 feet) to the middle of the pins, leaving approximately 1 ½” of “tail”.
Step Four: Take the length of the embroidery thread and begin and wrap it over and around one pin, then over and around the next, over and around the next, and so on until the desired size is reached. Finish off by tying the “tail” in a double knot to the length and trim. When attaching to a project, I use “Pop Up” Glue Dots as they are thicker and compensate for the uneven back.
For the pleated border, cut your kraft paper into 2” by 12” strips. Using a scoring blade, add indents at the 1” and then ¼” marks down the entire strip.
Bend the paper back and forth. Using your sewing machine and white thread (length setting of “3”), randomly add wavy lines stitching at least three times to secure into a flatter border strip. Add title work and add to projects.
Here is an example of these two techniques added to one card. Although Valentine’s Day was last week, anytime is a good time to tell someone “Love You Snow Much”.
Supplies: Core’dinations cardstock (Core Impressions – Jillibean Soup Collection, Chocolate Box), Jillibean Soup printed kraft paper, Sugar Picks pins and kraft paper, Fiskars heart punches and layering tape, Quickutz letter dies, We R’ Memory Keepers Corner Chomper, DMC embroidery thread, Glue Dots (Mini and Pop Up), other: sewing machine and thread.
Be sure to join me on Tuesday, March 29, when I will be sharing some sneak peeks of all my make and take projects and class images for ScrapFest (April 8 & 9, 2011) and CreativFestival (April 15 & 16, 2011).
