CHA surprise box giveaway!

Bloom shadow box and a tutorial!

Good morning!  When this beautiful project came through our email we knew we had to share it!  Jamie Cripps from Waterford, MI not only shared this frame but also provided instructions on how to make the beautiful rolled centre of the flowers too. 

 
Supplies:  Ritzy Ditzy Glitz in Bronze (P K Glitz); Cardstock: Cream Bling (Bazzill); Pattern Paper: Blossom Soup 6x6 Mini Pad (Jillibean Soup); Jewels: Gradient Gem Stickers in Red, Green, and Orange (Creative Charms); Punch: Scallop Circle Maker (Creative Memories) and Border (EK Success); Adhesive: Foam Squares (Creative Memories)

Confetti...not just for parties!

As I was looking around at some online inspiration I stopped (as I always do!) at the Studio Calico blog and saw April Foster's post about adding confetti to a layout.  My first thought was "how time consuming" until I saw how April did it.  Brilliant!  And of course I asked April if we could share it with you! 

"Confetti images have been so popular lately on my Pinterest feed, that I thought I would try to carry over the trend to a scrapbook layout.  To do that, I used a fairly neutral background (the package to Countryside’s Die Cut Tags).

Cover your background with a layer of Mod Podge.  When choosing your background, it’s best to start with a size larger than the final size you’d like.  Here, I didn’t need to cover the edges with Mod Podge since it’s larger than I needed.

Next, I used my swiss dot punch on a piece of patterned paper found in July’s Kit, MIND THE GAP.  While punching, I held it over my background so as the circles fell, they would stick to the Mod Podge in a random arrangement. "

DIY decor with Aly Dosdall!

Several months ago I picked up a shadow box at a Making Memories warehouse clearance sale.  I thought it would make a great piece of décor for my baby daughter’s room.  Well, life got busy and it sat there on my craft room shelf.  Now that my baby is almost 2 years old, I finally got it out and did something with it.  She already has a keepsake calendar and layout for her first year photos, so I thought I would use several of my favourite photos from her second year for this project.  Here’s what I came up with:

 
supplies: patterned paper, flocked transparency, journaling card, chipboard alphas, chipboard elements, filter paper embellishments, ribbon, buttons (Fancy Pants Designs), letter and number stickers (Bella Blvd), ric rac (Making Memories), scalloped circle punch and scalloped scallop edge punch (EK Success), shadow box (Making Memories), foam dots (American Crafts)

Here’s how you make this project:

1. Wipe your shadow box with a damp cloth to remove dust.  Your photos and products will adhere more securely that way.  Measure and record the size of the openings.

 

2. Gather, print, and crop your photos.  I enlarged my focal photo to 5x7 inches so I could use it to create a scrapbook page in the large opening, and cropped the others to fit the smaller openings I wanted to put them in.  For appropriately sized photos for small openings, consider printing them wallet size.

 

3. Gather your supplies.  I went with products from the same line to save me time and effort.  You could also pick a theme or colour scheme and “shop your stash” to create your own kit.

 

4. Adhere your photos first.  I used foam dots because my openings are so deep.  I left some openings blank so I could fill them with paper, embellishments, and journaling.

 

5. Fill in the rest of your shadow box openings with paper, embellishments, mementos, and whatever else you’d like.  Remember to use a good strong adhesive (a glue gun is great for 3D embellishments), and think “outside the box”—your elements don’t have to stay inside the openings.  They can be placed around the frame too.

I thought I’d share a few quick tips on how to make some of the flowers for this project.  First, I’ll start with the transparency flowers:

 

I used the gorgeous flocked transparency sheet from the Baby Mine line by Fancy Pants, and just punched some scalloped circles within the patterns.  For the flower centers I added some small buttons.  I really like the subtle but pretty results.

Next, I made some layered flowers using the filter paper embellishments from this line.  They come as flat circles, and because they’re made of thin pliable filter paper they’re super easy to scrunch, gather, stitch, staple, layer, mist, ink, or anything else you can come up with!

 

Just scrunch one of the filter papers toward its center and staple it.  Scrunch another one (a smaller size) and staple it on top of the other.  Punch out a small circle from a scrap of cardstock and cover it with glue dots.  Adhere some ric rac, winding it around and layering it from the outside toward the inside of the circle.  Add a stitched button to the center of the ric rac and adhere it over the layered filter papers.

Not only is this a great way to preserve memories and photos, but it’s also a great piece of DIY home décor that will add a wonderful touch to any room.  Give it a try!

Project 12 - June reveal and new August sketch!

Hello there, How was June? 

At my house, Morgan bridged from Daisy to Brownie in Girl Scouts, she and Payton performed in their Spring ballet/jazz recital, school ended, swimming lessons began, and we had family visit.  That’s just a few of the things that happened at my house, mixed with park visits, laundry, Father’s Day, and putting in time at the office. 

As always, I’m lucky to have Becky Fleck and a beautiful sketch to recap the happenings on a single layout.  This is what I came up with this month:

I ADORED this sketch.  I really liked working with square photos this month.  As I mentioned before, it took the pressure off worrying about orientation in my photo taking.  It made it much easier to choose which photos to use for my layout.

I used the current Studio Calico kit plus a few extras, including their veneer frame and some delicious wood buttons from Maya Road.  Don’t you love the Pink Paislee mistable trim?  I only had that little bit left, and it worked perfectly.

The other extra thing I utilized this month was white mist.  I was debating what patterned paper or cardstock to use for the background when I decided to use white mist on my kraft cardstock instead.  I used an older piece of die cut Bazzill cardstock for the scallop on the right.  I simply layered with some scrap paper and lightly misted the edges, and then sewed around that dividing line with teal thread.  I love the look and I saved a couple of pieces of cardstock too.

The first layout I wanted to share this month is from Andrea:

 

When I first saw it, I literally gasped.  That red paper with the cutout work on the flowers is just breathtaking.  I love that she paired it with black and white photos.  Fun photo treatment there too.  LOVELY.

The first thing I love about this one is that Sassafras border.  SOOO cute.  The next thing I love is that she filled this layout up, but when you really look at it, didn’t use a lot of product or spend a lot of money.  A low cost monthly recap!  Love that!  I also love the use of blue mist for texture here.

As you know, I LOOOOVE  Jen’s work.  One of the things I love most are her clean lines, but how her layouts still have a lot of detail.  This layout has 7 different Bo Bunny patterns from the Barefoot Collection in it.  Can you find them all?  I also love that she makes her font really small so she can jam pack it full of journaling, often Facebook updates.  Very cool indeed.

There is a lot you could do with this one.  I am really looking forward to playing with all that white space.  Fun times ahead!  Just in time to button up the summer and get ready for school.  In my house, school doesn’t start until after Labor Day in the U.S. (the first weekend in September).  But my kids don’t get out of school until mid-June.
