Hello everyone and welcome to Designer Project Wednesday. Washi tape is all the rage right now, but can be tricky to find! I recently saw a super cool video on Papertrey Ink on how to make your own washi tape and it inspired me to make some of my own, but with a twist.
You’ll need white tissue paper, Scor-Tape (or other double-sided tape that has release paper on one side), stamps, ink pads, brayer and a pair of sharp scissors. Ready to start?
Begin by crumpling up a piece of tissue paper into a ball, then folding it out flat with your hand. Trim a 2” x 18” piece.
On my sample, I stamped a numeric pattern across the center of the strip using red ink.
I followed that with a stamped random pattern of red, orange and green flowers, making sure I stamped off the edges.
When you are happy with the stamping, lightly scrunch up the strip of tissue paper so that it is bunched up in the center, like this:
Trim an 18” piece of Scor-Tape and lay it on your work surface, sticky side up. Lay the scrunched tissue across the tape and lightly press down. Run a brayer across the surface until all of the tissue is stuck to the tape.
Trim off the excess tissue paper from the tape using sharp scissors and, voila!, instant textured washi tape!
You can score your handmade tape a number of ways, such as in clipped coils or wrapped around a wood bobbin. Tinted tissue paper would also work great for this technique, or you could even spray mist the paper and let it dry before stamping. The possibilities are endless!
We’d love to see your creations using this technique. Post a link right here and share with us!
