Project 12 for May!

Hello there and welcome to Project 12 for May!  Are you still capturing your month in this fun easy way with me?  For Project 12 this month I wanted to share my process in creating a layout inspired by The Colour Suite in addition to the PageMaps sketch by Becky Fleck.  The first thing I do is shop my stash based on the color palette given.  I have found this type of challenge to be the perfect way to utilize the "stash".  What’s the point in keeping it all if you aren’t going to use it?  Based on the colour suite we are challenged with this month (just released today so check it out here), this is what I came up with:




If you are familiar with these products, you’ll notice that flower paper hails from…2008.  It was definitely time to put it on a layout!

It is only after I have the products picked out that I shop my digital files to put it all together on a layout.  Because this is Project 12, obviously that means going through my April photos and choosing those that represented the month for me.  This month that meant digging through my digital files as well as my camera photos, as I use my Iphone a lot in documenting our life.

I had previously decided to use the January 2010 sketch for this layout.

I got carried away with piecing paper for this layout and utilized several different prints. 

My girls are still busy helping me with school, we celebrated Easter, started softball, and have been enjoying the everyday.  The month just flew by.  For fun I wanted to see what my layout looked like when I utilized this sketch the first time in January, 2010.

Courtney Walsh is here!

Good morning SCT friends!  Did everyone have a great Mother's Day weekend?  Hopefully everyone had an opportunity to do something great...and perhaps be pampered a little?  This weekend for me was about small pleasures.  I came home to find my front planter had beautiful flowers planted in it, my favourite pink tulips were on the kitchen table, we had a beautiful brunch with the family and then a relaxing night of games and TV with the kids.  It was perfect day!  I hope in one way or another you had a few "perfect" moments too.

This week we have guest designer Courtney Walsh joining us with a great project and sharing a brand new line from Webster's Pages called Girl Land!  (pssst...you may want to visit Courtney's blog here!)

"I love when a collection inspires me to create something I’ve been meaning to create for a long time…and that’s just what happened when I opened my Girl Land papers. This envelope mini album has been on my to-do list for years, and I’m thrilled to finally have it finished!






In each envelope is a letter to my daughter letter from me designed to be opened  at a variety of pivotal points in her life. For instance, there’s a letter for “when you get your feelings hurt…” and another for “when you’ve lost your courage.” Have you written letters to any of your children or to someone special?

Spider Rose Tutorial with Becky!

Thanks for joining me today! Get your upcycle t-shirt ready and let’s create the spider rose I showed you in Monday’s post. To begin, you will need some basic supplies:



t-shirt, patterned paper, cardstock, chipboard, circle punch, baker’s twine, button, chipboard sticker, wet and dry adhesive, foam adhesive, tape

Before we create the flower, I wanted to mention a couple of things about the type of fabric you use. The t-shirt that I upcycled happened to be an interlocking weave, so it was quite stretchy in all directions. This technique will work great with 100% cotton, but you may need more thin strips of fabric to finish the rose. I liked the interlocking fabric because when you stretch out the strip, it crinkles and frays:




To start, punch out a circle from a piece of chipboard. For this example, my circle is 1¾”. Punch a small circle in the center. Mark five points around the perimeter of the circle with a pen.




Cut a 12” length of baker’s twine. Slip one end into the center hole and tape it off on the back. Wrap the twine in and out of the center hole, running the “spokes” up to each pen point, until you have five spokes. Tape off the opposite end onto the back of the chipboard circle.

This is what it will look like from the front side, where you will be working:

Cut several thin (1/4”) strips of your fabric. The tension you use while creating the flower will determine how many strips you need. I cut four, but ended up only needing three of them. Slip one end of a fabric strip into the center hole and tape or glue off on the back to secure.

Fold a thin piece of scrap cardstock over the other end and staple it in place. This will act as a sewing needle for your strip:




Begin winding the fabric strip around the spokes, going under one spoke, skipping the next, under the next spoke, and so on. Allow the strip to twist for added dimension. The looser your tension, the fuller the flower will be. Here’s what it will look like at the start:




Continue “sewing” the strip in and out of the spokes. When you reach the end of one strip, tuck it under the previous row with glue, then glue the end of a new strip in the same spot. Staple another piece of cardstock to the other end of the strip and continue on.

After two strips of fabric:




And the completed spider rose:

Top off the flower with a button and add to the front of a card. You’re done!






Super easy and so pretty! And the best part? You’ve upcycled something you might otherwise have thrown in the trash. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and I encourage you to try it with other types of fabrics and textiles. I was thinking burlap would look pretty cool for a boy page, eh?
