For the month of February Cindy Stevens created a beautiful and non-traditional Valentine's card inspired by this amazing PageMaps card sketch...
We loved how Cindy pieced so many layers to create texture and movement for her hot air balloon. Clever!
Supplies: Cardstock, American Crafts; Patterned Papers, Pebbles, American Crafts, Echo Park, Jenni Bowlin, Fancy Pants; Punches, Marvy Uchida, Recollections & Fiskars; Stickers, Cosmo Cricket; Twine, unknown; Cuttlebug, Swiss Dots Embossing plate; Brown Ink
Card size: 5.5x5.5" & uses a pre-cut, blank card & envelope
1. Trim pattern paper less 1/4" of the width of the card base. Round upper corners.
2. Trim 2 coordinating pieces of pattern paper approx. 2"H & 1.5"H (same width of paper used in above step).
3. Free hand cut matching waves on both pieces. Lightly distress & ink.
4. Adhere pieces to each other (& not to card), taking care not to use glue near outer edges where stitching will be.
5. Add a coordinating twine or ribbon around bottom of card & tie a bow.
6. Machine or hand stitch around outside of papers.
7. Using punches, punch out a 2.5" circle, 3" scalloped circle, clouds & hearts (see image).
8. Free hand cut balloon basket, heart on balloon, tree tops & trunks.
9. Lightly ink edges & adhere to card.
10. Draw on or handstitch balloon details and add sentiment sticker.
Cindy's Tip: I LOVE paper piecing elements to my pages & cards and am always on the look out for images that I can make from basic shapes (such as the trees & balloon).

Cindy, this is a fantastic card. The dimension is fabulous. It looks like the hot air balloon is drifting through the air over that beautiful scenery that you created with the layers.

First of all, I have a hot air balloon fetish... I LOVE THIS CARD! I have never done much paper piecing, always feeling it was too fussy, but this card is stunning, and even I could cut out those little shapes! I have two things I *LOVE* the most about this card... I really like how she stitched the lines between the balloon and its basket, and I am totally stealing the idea of the little hearts on the trees. I would have never thought to use the same color cardstock to do a little accent like that. ADORE! Thanks so much for sharing!!!!
