Monday with Megan: Arrow Attraction (and we're still celebrating 8!)

Looking for someone to point your crafting in the right direction? Look no further. It’s the arrow trend! Just like the hearts we discussed in an earlier post, this look is about more than Cupid. Some would say we have the Hunger Games series and Miss Katniss Everdeen to thank for the arrow trend, ahem, catching fire.

 

Maybe it is this sharp shooter. Or perhaps its the popularity of the chevron trend, which is still going strong, as the arrow shares its angular attributes.

When I first heard this song by Kacey Musgraves, it was like Cupid shot an arrow straight through my heart. And I’m not even a country music fan for the most part. Life can be confusing at times, and this song is a lovely reminder that we need to be true to ourselves. Not always an easy thing to do, but oh, so important. I hope you’ll take a listen.

Well, I think I’ve made my point—arrows are impressive! Feeling inspired? Tell me, how do you see yourself applying arrows?

Here’s a little paper straw arrow I made using micro beads from American Crafts and amazing foam hearts from Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L. Find instructions for this arrow and a layout I created using this embellishment on my blog today.

Surprise...it's birthday party time!!!

We are so excited to be celebrating our 8th birthday!  EIGHT!  It feels like yesterday this little idea came alive and today we can celebrate the past eight great years and celebrate all that is still to come!  Along the way we have been encouraged and supported by an incredible amount of readers, designers, store owners, companies and the fabulous people behind the companies we work with.  The moment we sent a note out saying we were celebrating, well, the prizes just kept coming.  Our partners are always so happy to celebrate YOU, our reader.

Card Cafe Thursday with Jill Foster!

Hi everyone! Jill Foster here and I’m honored to share a pair of cards as part of this week’s Card Café Thursday feature!

I don’t know about you, but I love adding dimension to my cards using dies.  I gathered up a few of my faves today including Penny Black’s Creative Dies 50-010 Delicate Wings, 51-029 Interlocking, 51-039 Feather & Frames, and 51-040 Hello Frame.

I stamped my large butterfly dies with Penny Black floral stamps, allowing the images to extend beyond the die cut.  For an artsy, watercolor look, I colored the images with a combination of markers and watercolor pencils. 

 A faux chalkboard background was easy to create—I simply used a white color pencil to draw an outline on black paper, added Memento Luxe Wedding Dress Ink around the edges using my fingertip, and then stamped my focal point image in black.

Finally, I layered all of my die cut pieces using dimensional adhesive and added them to a white notecard.

Pocket Style Wednesday with Nicole Harper!

Hello again, SCT fans...I'm eager to share another pocket page layout with you this month!!



One thing that I can't stress enough about working with pocket pages is adding detail + interest without adding bulk to the pockets. This is tricky sometimes, but with a few tricks that you can always reach for you'll be filling those pockets in no time! Stamps are a HUGE part of the process for me, especially layered onto photos. My favorite inks for this are the Brilliance metallics, but I am eager to try the new Color Theory inks from Studio Calico, as they are reportedly awesome for this specific purpose.

I used the March Gossamer Blue Life Pages kit for this layout, and couldn't resist using the FREE cut files that are included with it (how cute is that gold fox?!).



I used my scissors to cut the Y-O-U from one of the 3x4 cards included in the kit, and layered it onto another. Then I just ran it back and forth in my sewing machine haphazardly.  It adds a fun texture with minimal bulk. A few labels, my Tiny Attacher (I never do a page without it!), some epoxy shapes and a few die cuts added more detail. I colored the insides of the letters in the top row (left card) by twisting the lid off of my very favorite spray mist and dabbing a paint brush into the mist. This is a SUPER EASY way to get a watercolor effect without the mess ;)

Hopefully this helps with ideas in adding interest to your pages without buckling those pockets...if you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask!! Tag Tuesday with Vicki Boutin!

Spring is in the air…well at least the sun is out around here!  With it came the release of the Spring issue of the magazine and my slightly refurbished column called Project: Trend!  I can't wait to share lots of inspiring new trends found in paper crafting products and techniques!  In this issue I focused on frames.  I found so many inspiring ideas and products using frames that I decided to show you a few more in my Tag Tuesday posts here on the SCT blog.

Take a look at this card I created using two different frame options…

 

I used a Doodlebug card base and layered a Wood Veneer Frame from Webster's Pages with a kraft frame from Maya Road.

I really like the look of the layered frames and the butterfly adds the perfect touch.  Wrapping a little twine around the "polaroid" frame give the card some texture, too.

 

These Wood Frames from Webster's Pages have great detail and are not too thick for a card, pocket page or a layout.
