Good day everyone! Years ago, I tried this technique on rayon velvet and it got me to wondering if it would work on wool felt. I’m happy to say that it did and I’m here to show you how to emboss felt!
I should probably start out by saying that I did not try this technique on acrylic felt (the craft store kind), so I’m not sure if it would work, but I’ll encourage you to give it a try! I used wool felt and red rubber stamps by Taylored Expressions and love the results.
To start out, gather your supplies. You’ll need red rubber stamps, wool felt, spray bottle of water and metal dies (optional), and a craft or household iron. [This technique does not work on polymer or acrylic stamps as they cannot take the heat of the iron.]
Trim a piece of felt just a little bit bigger than the stamp image you wish to emboss.
Lay the felt piece over the red rubber stamp and spritz it with a light coating of water.
With your iron on a medium-low (silk) setting, press gently but firmly over the felt for a second or two, then carefully move the iron around until all of the moisture has been dried up by the iron. I did find that lighter felts will turn a bit dark in this process, but since you are ironing what will the backside of your felt design, don’t worry about it.
Remove the iron and gently lift up on a corner of the felt to see how deeply the stamp etched/embossed the felt. If you are happy with the design, remove it from the stamp and set it aside to cool. If it isn’t etched/embossed enough, spray it with water and iron it again.
Using coordinating dies or sharp scissors, cut out all of your shapes. For the small clouds, I embossed raindrops over a larger square of felt, then die cut the clouds. Assemble the pieces onto a card and you’re done!
Imagine all you can do with some wool felt and your favourite red rubber stamps! To get you started with this technique, Taylored Expressions has generously offered a selection of felt and the stamps that I used for this project to one lucky winner. Just leave a comment on this post and tell us how you might use a piece of embossed felt on your card or project! We will draw a random winner on June 19, 2014. Good luck!
Be sure to stop by the Taylored Expressions facebook page today if you have a moment to give them a big "SCT thank you!!!" They always love hearing from you.
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. I sure had a lot of fun making it!
