Happy Wednesday SCT friends! We are excited to have designer Stacy Cohen joining us today. If you read our summer issue you may remember Stacy's beautiful artwork in our reader's gallery which was our Publisher's Pick!
We're so glad Stacy could join us today with a wonderful tutorial on filling in the negative space! She does that so well. Please join us in welcoming Stacy!
"Hi everyone! Stacy Cohen here. I’m thrilled to be a guest on the SCT blog today! Summer is winding down and the kids are starting to head back to school. One of my daughters went back to school this week, and my other daughter goes back next week. I’m not quite ready to say goodbye to summer yet, so to keep the lazy-hazy-days-of-summer feeling going, I decided to scrap some summer photos.
I sometimes like to play around with the negative space on my projects by cutting or punching out shapes and filling the cut-out spaces with paper, washi tape or embellishments. On this layout I filled the spaces with strips of torn patterned paper to mimic the water in the photos. Here’s how I did it.
1. I cut circles from a piece of cardstock. These days there are many manual and electric cutting tools that will allow you to cut shapes from the center of a piece of paper. I actually did it the old school way. Yep, that’s right . . . I used my Coluzzle!
2. I placed the circle-cut cardstock on top of another piece of cardstock and traced the circles onto the bottom sheet.
3. I grabbed a variety of scraps from my paper scraps drawer and tore small strips, allowing the white core of the paper to show along the edge. This is a great way to use up paper scraps!
4. Using the traced circles as guides, I adhered layers of the patterned paper and lace strips to the bottom sheet.
5. I stitched around the circles on the top sheet using coordinating colors of embroidery floss. I then adhered the top sheet to the bottom sheet. I used 3D adhesive to give the layers some depth.
Thank you for letting me join you today. I hope you enjoy the last few weeks of summer!
Totally brilliant idea!!! Love the ebroidery floss sewn around the circles, and the shabby chic look of the torn paper and lace! A labour of love, but totally worth the end result!! Again, Brilliant idea!!! :)
