"Hello SCT friends! I'm so happy to celebrate World Card Making Day with you by sharing my sparkly shiny fall leaf card. I love Fall and thought this would be the perfect way to capture the beauty of the season.
I used a new stamp set from Cocoa Daisy and stamped all the leaves with Versamark embossing ink. I then used metallic, glitter, and opaque powders from American Crafts to create lots of sparkle and shine.
Watercolors are always a fun way to add color to your stamped images, so I played around with that and thought I'd share this tip to get multi-colored leaves:
- Put a lot of water on your brush and a little bit of color, fill the embossed image with the mix.
- Let it sit for a few minutes, then use a tissue to pull off the water. A bit of color will remain.
- Put a little water and a lot of color on your brush and add some streaks of color over the original color.
- Use your tissue to pull off any excess color.
- You may repeat this process a few times to get a variegated look.
Next I cut out a bunch of the leaves and started arranging them in a circle, but found I was having difficulty working with the small leaves on the paper, so I made a "wreath form." Instructions are as follows:
- I used a 2.5 inch punch to make the outer circle, you can use whatever larger size you'll need.
- I marked the center of the circle with a dot, then used a smaller punch, slid the punched circle into a smaller punch (I used a 1 5/8 inch punch for the inner circle) making sure the dot was in the center and punched again.
- The result is a form you can use to attach your leaves to. It's much easier to work with because you can hold it and turn it as needed.
Using glue and adhesive foam, I layered all my leaves until it looked even and full. I added some bling and wrapped the whole wreath with a thin gold string.
I added my sentiment, some white paint, and a bit more glitter then attached everything to a card base and voila, we're done!
Yes, it was a labor intensive card, but so worth it. I hope you'll give it a try!" ~ Emily Pitts

"Hello! I’m so excited to be here creating and celebrating World Card Making Day 2016 with you. This holiday is near and dear to my heart, as I actually played a very involved role in getting it established many years ago. I love seeing how much the day has grown since then. Being here, now, making cards with you is such a treat!
Holidays and sparkle go hand in hand. How fun that there are so many ways to add shine to a design! I went with pre-made glitter paper from the darling new Sugar Plum collection by My Mind’s Eye and Adhesive Sequins (love!) by Jillibean Soup.
Here’s how my card came together:
step 1: Fold paper in half and trim about one inch from the front of the fold.
step 2: Machine-stitch the trimmed piece back in place, sewing it to the back of the paper. This creates a cool matchbook-style card (where the front flap of the card folds into the flap along the bottom, keeping it closed).
NOTE: This stretch of paper was long enough that I actually cut it to become two cards. I’m all for stretching those supplies when making holiday cards!
step 3: Trim trees from another sheet of paper from the same Sugar Plum collection and adhere them to the card. Add a chipboard tree and star (also from MME collection) for extra depth!
step 4: Trim the tree with Adhesive Sequins by Jillibean Soup. If only decorating my real tree were so quick, easy, and mess free. ;)
Done and done—a simple holiday card that requires very few supplies!
To see how I turned the second half of this design into a gift-card holder/card, check out my blog. Happy holiday card-making season, dear friends! I hope your WCMD celebration sparkles!
Warmly,
Megan Hoeppner, SCT editor-in-chief
