We are loving sharing some of what makes Canada special with you in celebration of #canada150! Let's take a walk back in history...
Nominated as one of the “Seven Wonders of Canada” [specifically the one that welcomes people to Rankin Inlet], the inukshuk (pronounced “inook-shook” adorns the flag of Nunavut, one of three Canadian Territories. Built of rocks in the likeness of man, one of the most recognized symbols of our Indigenous People, the inukshuk communicates direction, messages, and weather to arctic travellers. How incredible is it that in on of the harshest climates on Earth, people stopped to build inuksuit (plural) to help others on their path? Inuksuit have been found adjacent to archaeological sites dating from 2400 to 1800 BCE in the Mingo Lake region of southwest Baffin Island. To learn more about these incredible and iconic structures, please visit the Canadian Encyclopedia here.
With as many as 65 languages spoken by Indigenous People, the totem pole needs no words to tell its story. Carved into a large tree and painted by hand, each relays messages of family lines, important events, or legends. They are grand! Totem poles have become one of the key symbols for the Northwest Native people. Take a drive through Stanley Park in Vancouver and you'll see some beautiful totem poles that tell so many stories! Thank you to all our Indigenous People for sharing Turtle Island with us!

It is always important to learn about and appreciate not only our own family's culture and history, but also that of this great country. Sometimes we need reminders of how special this country is and not to take it for granted.

Canada has a rich history beginning with the First Nations and we still owe it to them that they believe in preservation of our environment. It is our duty to repair the damages and trauma that they did not deserve. Recognizing their cultural heritage and legacy through totem poles and Inukshuk are significantly important for Canadians.
