Colour Suite November with Summer Fullerton...and a giveaway!

Welcome to the November Colour Suite!  This month I was inspired by a very beautiful and colourful image I found on Pinterest. The scrapbooking colour combinations from this image are endless so I focused in on the navy and grey as the neutrals and built the colour suite from here. I then added the forest green, pink and orange. I loved how the red played off the pink but I can’t seem to ever put red and green together unless it’s Christmas.

For my layout I took a very neutral approach and used the colours as secondary players. I have always been a "colour in your face scrapbooker" and my layout seemed like a very subtle way to tackle this month’s challenge. Funny how the green was such a huge part of why I chose specific colours this month yet I hardly used it on my layout.

This month I invited the talented Diane Payne to join me and take the Colour Suite challenge. I met Diane when she joined the Lily Bee design team. I immediately fell in love with Diane’s modern fresh scrapbooking style, it’s the perfect mix of clean and messy that I wish I could reproduce on my pages. I tend to take a very literal approach to the Colour Suite so I love having guest designers because they almost always tend to push the creative boundary. Diane embraced told me that while she used all the colours she was drawn to the pink and orange. I love how she managed to mix all the colour without overloading her story and photo.

Thanks again for joining me this month and taking all the Colour Suite challenges. After 3 1/2 years I am retiring the Colour Suite. Each month has been a personal exploration of colour for me and while I am sad this chapter of my creative journey is closing I am ready to write the next chapter. Colour Suite September with Summer Fullerton and Virginia Nebel!

Welcome to the September Colour Suite! This month I sent my kids back to school, my son is a senior and my daughter is a freshman in high school. I was feeling a bit nostalgic for the good old days when they were in elementary school so I began this Colour Suite by choosing primary colours: red, blue and yellow. Primary colours always remind me of school. Followers of the Colour Suite know I often add a pop of something special this month it was the purple. I then rounded the Colour Suite with an espresso brown. I was super inspired by the brown and blue of this month’s Colour Suite. These colours neutralize the brightness of the yellow, red and purple making this Colour Suite perfect for September.

This month I invited the Scrapbook & Cards Today newest design team member Virginia Nebel to take the Colour Suite challenge! Virginia and I both design for Becky Fleck and PageMaps together so I was super excited to bring her over to my world of colour. Virginia told me she was drawn in to the classic timeless navy blue of the Colour Suite. It was her main colour of choice when she created her layout. The Colour Suite is composed of 5 colours. There are no rules for using the Colour Suite while I present you with 5 colours there is nothing that says you have to use each colour. Virginia took this approach with her layout. One of these days I am going to have to try this on one of my layouts.

Colour Suite August with Summer Fullerton!

Welcome to the August Colour Suite. This month I found a wonderful inspiration piece on pinterest to use as my colour inspiration. I often start my Colour Suites this way but they morph and change and never end up resembling the original inspiration! I adored my inspiration piece and really wanted to stay true to it for this month’s challenge.

This month I want to talk about blurring the lines. Colour is subjective and while I adore the gold I think it’s intimidating and can be hard to incorporate on a layout. And if you're like me you simply might not have much gold handy in your stash. This is where we blur the lines. While I was able to pull a few gold goodies from my stash to put on my layout I also thought the gold could easily be interpreted as a kraft brown. Take this idea one step further by using wood or cork like products or pattered papers on your project.

 

Let the inspiration take you on a journey and remember it’s okay to blur the lines.

Colour Suite June with Summer Fullerton and Leslie Ashe!

Happy June SCT friends!  Welcome to the June Colour Suite. Every so often when I am putting together a Colour Suite I look back over the last few months and look for colours I haven’t picked in a while. For June my inspiration colour was pink and not just any pink but a bright stunning girly pink. I immediately paired my inspiration colour with a softer pink and a bright sunny yellow. Then to balance out the brights I added a sage green and a deep blue.

Did you notice anything different about this month’s Colour Suite? I deliberately chose not to include a neutral base colour. I did this to allow you, the designer, to either chose your own neutral for your layout or to leave it completely off your project all together. Neutrals like black, white or kraft don’t alter the integrity of a Colour Suite and I generally think you can mix in these basics into just about any layout as needed to balance out colour or pattern. I chose white as my neutral for my layout. I love how it’s brings a crisp fresh pop to my layout and the colours just jump right out and grab you. While I was initially drawn to the feminie girly pinks of this Colour Suite I ended up using more yellow than any other colour on my layout.

 

This month I invited my friend and fellow designer Leslie Ashe to take the Colour Suite challenge. I first worked with Leslie in late 2006 and most recently we both designed for Lily Bee together. A few months back Leslie decided to take a break from crafting and when I invited her to join me this month she happily agreed saying this was the perfect “push” she needed to jump back into crafting with.

One of the best parts about the Colour Suite is you aren’t tied down to anything. You can use any product you want, scrapbook any story that inspires you and you can use the colours any way you feel like. From a creative perspective the world is your oyster.

I love having guests each month I always enjoy that moment when I open their email and see what they created using my colours. This month I couldn’t help but notice so many similarities between what Leslie and I did. While our designs are totally different I couldn’t get over some of the basic similarities of our layouts, we chose a similar topic, white bases and we even both used blue splatters. I find that while we have several similarities our layouts are also very uniquely different.

I know I freely admit to creating this month’s Colour Suite with girly intent I would love to point out by simply focusing on the blue, yellow and green this Colour suite could easily be taken a totally different direction. This is one of the best things about the Colour Suite by simply changing up proportions you can have a fresh new look.

Colour Suite May with Summer Fullerton and Michelle Woerner!

Welcome to the May Colour Suite! It seems in just a blink of the eye almost half the year has gone by. Soon the kids will be out of school we will all be basking in the glorious sun and warmth we craved all winter long. Spring is that transition period between winter and summer, depending on where you live it’s a little bit of everything. For me spring starts off cold and wet and is followed by a little sun, more rain and then just maybe things might warm up. This was the inspiration for the May Colour Suite. This month I began with a light and dark grey these, then I topped these 2 neutrals with a yellow, blue and a red/orange. This month’s Colour Suite is just like spring...dark and rainy followed by a bit of sun.

This is one of those Colour Suites that could be used to scrapbook just about anything. While at first glance the colours might seem masculine I feel as if they are really quite gender neutral. I can see using these colours on all kind of layouts from birthday, to sports, back to school to family vacations, the possibilities are endless. I took the liberty to add some white cardstock to my layout. While this isn’t formally included in the Colour Suite it doesn’t take away from the original colours. This month I used more of the colours and less of the neutrals on my layout. I used the red to flank the right and left sides of my layout and then I fanned the patterned papers out from my photo.

This month I invited a my friend and card maker Michelle Woerner to join me for this month's Colour Suite. It’s been a couple of years since I used the Colour Suite to make cards. I am a scrapbooker first and a cardmaker second so I thought we really needed to show how the Colour Suite can be used on things other than layouts. When I invite a guest to play along I never look at their work until I am finished with my layout. I don’t want to be subconsciously influenced by how some else interrupts my colours. Imagine my surprise when I saw Michelle’s cards and immediately noticed we both felt drawn by the need to add white to our projects. I think there is something about the white that really brightens up the colours I chose this month.

I often finish the colour suite off with a little lesson or an “ahhh haaa” moment. This month I was reminded the Colour Suite is subjective. It is meant to guide your creativity. If the colours I chose aren’t working for you can always make changes without interrupting the original look and feel of a Colour Suite. By adding more neutrals like black or white or by using a darker/lighter shades of one of the colours you merely just are altering the intensity of the Colour Suite. Remember there is no right or wrong way to scrapbook.

Colour Suite April with Summer Fullerton and Mandy Koeppen!

 

 

Happy Spring crafters and welcome to the April Colour Suite! The Pantone colour of the year is radiant orchid  so I thought it would be a wonderful starting point for this month’s Colour Suite.

I love unexpected colours so I paired purple with a chartreuse green and a light pale mint green. I rounded out this Colour Suite with cream and silver. While I love the silver I thought this colour could also be interrupted as a taupe/grey. Please note purple isn’t super prevalent in scrapbooking don’t fret if what you use doesn’t totally match the colours I have chosen. The purple I chose for my layout ended up being slightly darker than what I had originally intended and you know what...that’s okay!

I often feel as if when I scrapbook for the Colour Suite I am always about the colour. One of my goals this month was to to use more of the subtle colours from the suite and use the brights as secondary enhancements to my layout. I love to have little personal scrapbooking goals like this they give me a little added push when I feel like I am in a rut.

This month I invited my friend Mandy Koeppen to join me and take the Colour Suite challenge. Mandy was excited to join me and the feeling was totally mutual because I am a huge fan of Mandy’s work. She had the perfect photo of her oldest daughter she knew she wanted to scrap but she confessed that while she is a girl momma she doesn’t often scrapbook with purple or sparkles so she had to make a special trip to the scrapbook store. To make the Colour Suite her own Mandy used a great purple patterned paper from Studio Calico (I have the same paper and almost used it myself) and she toned down the sparkly silver glitter paper with some vellum.

I often go straight to patterned paper and cardstock as my main source of colour but Mandy reminded me embellishments can play a huge role in adding colour to your layout too.
