Old, New, Borrowed, COOL with Kelly Goree!

Welcome to SEPTEMBER!!! I hope you’re having a fantastic (holiday for some + Back to School for others) weekend! I appreciate you stopping by today and letting me share this month’s edition of OLD NEW BORROWED COOL with you! While I hate that this weekend signifies the official “end of Summer”, Fall is BY FAR my favorite season and so I’m ready to welcome it with open arms!

And with the arrival of Fall comes one of my favorite things ever (besides my birthday) – FOOTBALL SEASON! Yes, I said that! My father wouldn't have ever believed it but it changed me once my oldest started playing the game. Those of you that know Ethan (or have seen my many layouts about him!) know that Ethan has played football for forever. It’s a part of him and because of that it became a part of me. So it might shock you to know that Ethan made the big decision to take this season off and focus on being a High School 8th grader and perhaps even give another sport a try. Which means, my friends, I am left without football to cheer for. And trust me when I say that it is killing ME way more than it is him. I miss it. I mean REALLLLLY miss it. Like horribly miss it.

So for this month’s Old New Borrowed Cool I decided to do a little “Ode to Football” and my son. And perhaps it will ease the football-sized hole in my heart for a just a bit!

Now before I share my project, please let me once again recap the premise for this blog series. Each month I'll bring you a new post that incorporates something OLD from my stash, something NEW that I might have just picked up and something BORROWED from wherever I can get it to create something COOL to share with you! It's just that easy. 

I want to start by mentioning that it had been such a long time since I had done a layout for ONBC, that I wanted to fix that this month…and as a bonus (gasp!) it’s a DOUBLE pager! Now how’s that for a holiday surprise?!

I’m going to change things up just a bit this month by listing my BORROWED first. Borrowed for some reason is usually the hardest for me to come up with but I was so excited by this month’s choices. Yep, choices, as in TWO!

BORROWED: First because I wanted to do a double page layout quickly, I went to my trusty sketch folder and pulled out this gorgeous 8.5x11 double page sketch by my talented friend Becky Fleck! I LOVE that the right page is embellishments and journaling and that the left is all photos! It was so much fun to work with.

But even more exciting was finding this sheet of October Afternoon paper. I have always loved this line for its boy-ish feel but even more for beautiful color palette. The navy, lt. blue and red-orange was just perfect for what I had in mind!

OLD: These beautiful October Afternoon papers and some fun Technique Tuesday chipboard tiles I’ve had in my stash for practically forever.

NEW: BasicGrey Hey Boy! Title stickers and chipboard. How I love that line!

COOL: This super-fun, bold layout that honors both my son’s first start as Quarterback and my love of football!

And now, here’s the finished project!

So now as always, it’s challenge time. Get in there and create something that reminds you of fall! It doesn’t have to be a layout like mine – but try a card or make a wreath or anything that will put you in the spirit! I can’t wait to see it!

Old, New, Borrowed, COOL with Kelly Goree!

Hi there and HAPPY AUGUST!

Thanks so much for stopping by today and checking out this month’s edition of OLD NEW BORROWED COOL!! Where I’m from, the month of August means wrapping up summer and (already) the start of school! Seriously! We’ve been in full shopping mode for everything from shoes to supplies to clothes in full anticipation of the big day (August 7th, August 7th, August 7th!)! I’m in heaven! I adore school, school supplies and even the smell of crayons! Yes, I’m *that* girl! And if I’m telling the full truth, I’ll have to admit that my collection of school-related scrapbooking papers is utterly ridiculous! I can’t pass up a tablet or script paper even if I already have twenty in my stash.

But probably the biggest reason that I’m so pre-occupied with school is that my oldest is making the transition to high school. HIGH SCHOOL! I know many of you remember him when he was just a tiny boy, so I’m sure this shocks you just as much as me! The thing is that he’s still just in 8th grade. Our school district has moved 8th graders in the high school because of middle school overcrowding and so it’s just a very strange situation all around. What DO you call an 8th grader in high school?! So with all those thoughts running through my head I decided that I wanted to make him an 8th grade album – an album for those memories that aren’t a complete part of the freshman to senior part of high school, a smash album if you will where he can record his own memories and thoughts of what it was like his 8th grade year.

Old, New, Borrowed, COOL with Kelly Goree!

Hi there!!!

Thanks so much for stopping by today and letting me share July’s edition of OLD NEW BORROWED COOL with you! Can you believe it’s JULY and half of 2013 had gone by already?! What’s more, for us here in Kentucky, almost half our summer is gone as well! We’ve been crazy busy as I’m sure you all have with wonderful summer activities like barbeques, sleepovers, swimming….and SUMMER CAMPS!! Yes, I just said those two magical words! Between my all my boys, one, two or even all three of them have been at some camp or another pretty much every week. My youngest had three back-to-back and he’s VERY excited that this week is all his own – ESPECIALLY since his dad and two older brothers are at scout camp!

That means he has his mama and his dog all to himself. I am pretty sure that’s a boy’s idea of paradise!

He’s looking forward to doing things like sleeping in, having what HE wants for dinner, going to a matinee of Monsters University and Thursday’s 4^th of July fireworks. Speaking of the 4^th of July, he’s been saving up his money to buy fireworks of his own – things like sparklers and popper and whatever else Mom deems somewhat safe. He loves seeing everything decked out in red, white and blue (including our house) and insisted that we make some kind of patriotic craft this week. And THAT, my friends, is where this month’s Old New Borrowed Cool comes in! What is better than a two-fer, right?!

Because my creativity seems to be at a halt with CHA prep work taxing my brain, I decided to head to my favorite inspiration source (you know what’s coming, right?)…yep – PINTEREST! I looked up “4^th of July” crafts and I saw the cutest little luminaries made from empty cans! “HEY!” I thought. “I have all the stuff I might need to make those!” And with that I sent my little man off on a mission to round up all the necessary ingredients to get our craft on.

Now before I share with you what we did, please let me once again recap the premise for this blog series. It's just that easy. 

This month’s final selections were:

OLD: My trusty, tried & true BIG BITE Crop-a-dile. How I love this thing. And when I remembered one of its original selling points was that it punched through METAL, I was stoked!

NEW: Okay. I’m going to confess. There isn’t much new here unless you count my cans of beans and veggies. So I am. Totally. They were brand new. And now the contents of each can is now sitting in my fridge!

BORROWED: A fun up-cycle idea from THIS POST on Pinterest. http://pinterest.com/pin/469429961129767577/ Oh, and my husband’s spray paints. Shhhh! Don’t tell him!

COOL: These adorable patriotic tin can lanterns that I am quite sure you can make with what you already have around your house, too!

 

 

After cleaning and washing out the cans, my son and I set about to drawing designs on them. We did a star, a firework burst (he really liked that one) and a USA. But truly you could do anything from a Maple Leaf for Canada day to a daisy for general summer and everything in between. These would be SO cute for a party!

After drawing the design, it was time for the hardest part of this project – the punching through the metal. While it wasn’t difficult, the can sometimes bends if you aren’t careful and the little shards that remain once you punch can go everywhere. My big tip is to keep your design a bit toward the top of the can as the crop-a-dile can’t reach at the very bottom due to the depth of its punching arm. I also removed its feet so it would fit in the can better.

Once the design is punched, it’s time to spray. I just cut a few plain strips of paper to wrap around the can and mask off where I didn’t want the paint to go and went to town. Repeat this step for each stripe and pretty soon you’ll have this….

Supply List: Tin cans, Spray Paint, Crop-a-dile, wire, Fiskars punches, Bella Blvd. Chipboard alphas, Sharpie marker, paper, tape.

I can’t wait to see what these look like at night! My guy is very excited about them and insisted I light them immediately though in the daylight you couldn’t see how cool they are bound to be! But it made him happy and that really was what this was all about!

So now as always, it’s challenge time. Get in there and create something with your little monkeys! Make some kind of craft that they’ll be excited about! And just enjoy spending time with them. The summer goes by so quickly – soak it up!

Old, New, Borrowed, COOL with Kelly Goree!

Hi there!!!

Thank you for stopping by today and letting me share June’s edition of OLD NEW BORROWED COOL with you! (see past ONBC challenges here) I am so excited to say it’s June and the official start of our summer!  My boys are out of school now and MOST days that’s a good thing! We’re totally in our summer schedule of no alarm clock, late dinners, outdoor fun and even later bedtimes. (See what I mean about good MOST of the time?!)

 But I love June for more reasons than just the warm weather as it’s also the month that my middle son was born. His birthday is always right around Father’s Day so I jokingly tell my husband that since he already got the best present I could give, there’s no need for more!  Of course I don’t really mean that as my husband is really one of the most hands-on, involved dads I know. He does so much with our boys and loves that he gets to and as such totally deserves to be celebrated.

So for this month’s ONBC, I thought I’d do just that and make him an extra special Father’s Day card. But this card will have a surprise element and also be a gift card holder perfect for tucking in a little extra something on his special day!

This month’s final selections were:

OLD: These ancient but sturdy circle punches. I think they were the first punches I ever bought. They don’t look pretty anymore, but they sure do the job and I love them for that! And then of course my Fiskars star punches. While not as old, they are still a staple of my scrappy arsenal, especially being the mom of boys!

NEW: The gorgeous BasicGrey HIPSTER line! You can’t get more masculine than this line and it’s so groovy with its retro hip vibe! LOVE LOVE LOVE it! (See above reference to ‘mom of boys.’)

BORROWED: I snagged this fun gift card holder-making technique from my talented friend Kimber McGray’s book 175 Fresh Card Ideas. I have had the pleasure of working with Kimber on a couple of her books and I always credit her with the fact that I make cards at all! The book is uber-inspiring and full of fun tips and tricks just like this one I’m going to share with you today!

COOL: This super-fun, retro rad gift card holder just waiting to give to Dad for Father’s Day!

So before I show you the final project, let’s get started on how to make the 4.25”x5.5” gift card holder. (I like standard sizes so this will fit into your A2 envies with ease!)

First you will need:

• Cardstock
• Scoring board
• 1.5” circle punch
• Craft knife
• Adhesive Tape

Trim piece of cardstock to 12”x5.5”. Score at 4.25”, 6” and 7.75” mark.

 

Fold cardstock as shown along the scored lines.

 

Holding the center fold together, punch a half circle from the center of the fold using the 1.5” circle punch.

 

 

Open the card back up and cut as shown along the center fold to create enough room to slide in a gift card.

 

Apply strong tape adhesive along the three sides of the center fold as shown (making sure to leave the area containing the circle free). Seal the fold up so it can securely hold the gift card.

 

 

All that’s left is inserting the gift card!   And now that we’ve done that, here’s the finished project!

 

 

Supply List: BasicGrey Hipster PP, brads, chipboard shapes, wood veneers, chipboard alpha; Studio Calico wood veneer; Core’dinations cardstock’ Fiskars star punches; EK Success circle punch; Colorbox chalk ink; Hero Arts ink; Stampin’ Up! ink; Zig pen; Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L.

Seriously – doesn’t this card just make you laugh?! I can’t stop smiling when I look at it – that little retro face is just too cute! And I know my husband will be thrilled to be called a “Super Star Rad Dad” almost as much as he will be to get the gift card!

So now as always, it’s challenge time. Get in there and create something for that wonderful father in YOUR life whether it’s a card or something else. Get the kids involved! Have fun with it! Make something fun that makes YOU laugh! I can’t wait to see it!

Old, New, Borrowed, COOL with Kelly Goree!

 

Hi there!!!    Thank you for stopping by today and letting me share this month’s edition of OLD NEW BORROWED COOL with you! It’s MAY! MAY! MAY! MAY! MAY! MAY! I can hardly believe I’m typing that as the year seems to be just flying by, doesn’t it? I absolutely love May and the beautiful flowers and warmer weather it brings, but what I love most about May?  MOTHER’S DAY! Yes, indeed. I’m not too big to admit that I love having a holiday to honor all that I do as a mom! And if it happens to include being spoiled by my kiddos with handmade cards and breakfast in bed, that’s all the better!

As I was thinking about this and how much I adore my guys it started me thinking about my relationship with my own mother. If I’m completely honest I have to admit that my mom and I have never had the typical mother/daughter relationship – or maybe we have. But we’re so alike in so many ways that it always strained us and made things difficult. I know I don’t tell her enough that I love her and that there are so many wonderful things about her that I remember and want to document. And it occurred to me – I have never ever scrapbooked a page about me and my mom. I was shocked! And then I came across this photo in one of my living room drawers.

 

How I love this photo. I love how stylish my mom looks here standing in front of the first house I remember and how even at 4 1/2 I was fully accessorized with a handbag that “goes” not “matches.” (Anyone catch that “What not to Wear” reference there?!) I love her sunglasses and our smiles.

One of my favorite memories from that period was how my mom and I would always sing. We’d sing anywhere but most especially when I was in the bath tub (acoustics are so much better in a bathroom, you know!). Our songs ranged from the ABC’s to Mary Had a Little Lamb. But my absolute favorite song was “You are My Sunshine.” I knew every word even if “grey” was “grape” in my 4-year-old head.

This photo gave me the perfect chance to get that down on paper and Mother’s Day became the perfect time for me to do my first page ever about my mother & me.

OLD: This amazing photo of my mother & me circa 1975. I adore it and besides, you don’t get much *older* than that! ;)  

NEW: The absolutely gorgeous Dear Lizzy LUCKY CHARM line. I can’t even tell you how in love with this line I am. I am swooning over the mint green + navy combination. Add in a little yellow & vibrant red-orange and I’m in heaven. I. LOVE. IT. (Did I already say that?!)

BORROWED: This time I decided to borrow a “style.” Have you ever wanted to scrapbook like someone else – even if only for a day – and to try on their “style?” We I did just that. I borrowed my friend Nicole Nowasad’s style for this project. I have had a chance to get to know Nicole at our Crop & Create events and I absolutely love her pages and whimsical style. One of my favorite things she does is layer the mats under her photos…so that is just what I did here.

COOL: Creating a layout for the first time about my mom & me…and documenting one of my favorite memories from childhood.

So now it’s challenge time. I challenge you in several ways. First – scrap something for your mother if you’re able. Scrap a card for her, scrap a page about her like I did, just scrap something. And then push yourself just a bit further…scrapbook a page about someone important to you that you’ve never scrapbooked before whether it’s a grandparent, friend, nephew, neighbor, whatever! Just make something pretty! I can’t wait to see what you come up with.

Hi there!!!  Thank you for stopping by today and letting me share this month’s edition of OLD NEW BORROWED COOL! I’m so glad you’re here to help me WELCOME APRIL!  This spring as been a bit unusual with the cold weather snaps that keep breaking through bringing tons of snow, but we’re mustering through! One of the fun ways that I’ve been dealing with the icky weather has been spending it with great friends and family. I’ve been lucky enough to have not one but TWO Scrapbook & Card’s Today Crop & Create events within two weeks of each other and I can’t think of anything I’d rather do. I love to teach. But I have to admit, I have been terrible about practicing what I preach. I realized this past event that I haven’t scrapbooked ONE layout or project documenting my wonderful times and these amazing weekends.
 
And guess what? I decided to fix that! Check out this fun little mini book I created to hold some of my cherished memories of each Crop & Create event!

This month’s final selections were:

OLD: Some BasicGrey alphabet stickers – my tried and true favorites – in my favorite basic color, BLACK.

NEW: A little BoBunny Mamarazzi2, some yummy Seen & Noted by Pebbles, Inc. (swoon), these AMAZING AmyTangerine thickers from American Crafts as well as incredible flair by Evalicious! (I admit to being a bit “new” heavy this month…I.CAN’T.HELP.IT!!!)

BORROWED: Ahem. Some might say “swiped or stolen” this month, but I say that’s all just semantics, kinda like potato and po-tah-toe, but I scored these fun Studio Calico printables from the sweet Stephanie Hart and this great Silhouette diecut using Amy Tangerine paper from Ms. Kristine Davidson while I was at Moncton’s Crop & Create! (I’m sneaky like that!)

COOL: This fun, easy, you can do it in just a few minutes chipboard album perfect for storing all those precious photos from a great girls’ weekend away! And even better than that, I’m going to show you just how to do it!

Trim two strips of 12” patterned paper to desired width. For this project, I did 5.25”. Score and fold at each 4” mark like an accordion.

Trim an 8”x5.25” piece of patterned paper. Score and fold in half – at the 4” mark. (The height will change depending on how tall you want your book but it will match the width in step 1.) Use it to join the two 12” strips together as shown so you have one long accordion folded strip.

Cut a two pieces of chipboard slightly larger than the folded strip size. In our case, our folded paper is 4”x5.25” so I cut my chipboard to 4.25”x5.5”(a standard card size). Cover each piece in patterned paper as shown.

Adhere covers to each end of the accordion strip to for a cute little book.

Supply List: BoBunny patterned paper, stamps; BasicGrey alpha stickers; Pebbles Inc. patterned paper; Evalicious flair and diecuts; My Mind’s Eye stickers, twine; Studio Calico printables; American Craft Thickers; Bazzill cardstock; chipboard; Staz-on Ink; adhesive.

So let’s get to it! I challenge each of you to create your own mini-album of some sort. I don’t care what kind you do, just have fun with it! Get those photos into that album.
